Applying for a passport or identity card
You can personally apply for a passport or identity card (ID card) at the municipality where you are registered. Make an appointment with the Civil Affairs department by calling (0297) 513 111.
The costs for a Dutch passport are (rates for 2024):
- for persons under 18 years old: €63.40
- for persons 18 years old and older: €83.85
The costs for a Dutch identity card are:
- for persons under 18 years old: €40.90
- for persons 18 years old and older: €75.80
If you want to apply for a passport or identity card urgently, an additional fee of €57.05 will be charged.
You can collect your passport or identity card after 5 working days. If you make an expedited request before 2 pm, you can collect your passport or identity card the next day.
Submit your old passport if you haven't done so at the time of application. You have 3 months to collect your passport or identity card.
What to bring:
- All travel documents in your possession (both passports and identity cards). Also, bring expired travel documents. If you have dual nationality, bring your foreign travel document as well.
- 1 recent color passport photo, not older than 6 months at the time of application, complying with the passport photo requirements. For detailed information and photo requirements, please visit Rijksoverheid.nl.
Pay for your passport or identity card with your debit card during the application.
You can keep your old passport during the application
Your current passport will be taken if it has expired. If your passport is still valid, you can hand it over when collecting or having it delivered. If you want to keep your old passport, you can indicate this, and it will be returned to you with holes punched through it.
Visa
If your old passport still contains a valid visa, you must indicate that you do not want those pages perforated. Check with the consulate or embassy of the country to see if the visa is still valid.
Passport or identity card application for children
Minors under the age of 14 need an identity document for healthcare purposes. They must be able to identify themselves like everyone else when they need medical care. Children traveling abroad require their own passport or identity card.
Parental consent for passport or identity card applications
- Children up to 12 years old require consent from both parents to apply for an ID card. Children up to 18 years old require consent from both parents to apply for a passport.
- Both parents or guardians can give written consent by using the Consent form for permission to travel with a minor child abroad (pdf, 135 kB).
- Children must apply for and collect a passport or identity card in person, regardless of their age.
- If no parent or guardian accompanies the application, the child must bring a copy of the identification document of both parents or guardians with the consent form.
- If one parent or guardian accompanies the application, they must bring a copy of the identification document of the other parent or guardian and be able to identify themselves.
Traveling with minor children
If you plan to travel abroad with a minor child, permission from the legal guardians is required. Before traveling, you must have the appropriate documents in your possession. When you receive a new passport, your citizen service number (BSN) is printed on the back. It is displayed both as readable numbers and in the QR code.
